Abd Alsattar Ardati

I'm a collaboration enthusiast and Lecturer at the University of St Andrews School of Computer Science. Originally from Syria, I've been driven by the impact of limited knowledge access to address social challenges through research and educational initiatives.

Since discovering the Wikimedia Foundation's mission in May 2018, I've been dedicated to supporting its movement, starting with an MSc dissertation focused on enhancing the Wikipedia content translation tool and supporting volunteer translation. During my PhD, I introduced a co-design framework for grassroots solutions and used it to co-designed WikiSync, a collaborative Wikipedia editing tool.

In 2021, I co-founded the IDEA Network to systematically support open-knowledge research projects. Presently, I'm focused on participatory design strategies to address social issues like digital poverty, exploring Wikipedia's potential as a medium to provide assistance to those affected.

While I'm not a regular contributor, I'm devoted to researching ways to improve Wikipedia for everyone. Outside of academia, I enjoy music, aesthetic bodybuilding, and archery.

I am the Coordinator of the Community Libraries Association of Uganda (COLAU) and a volunteer with the Wikimedia User Group Uganda (WUGU). I am mainly active in Wikimedia projects under the Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums (GLAM).
As a librarian by profession, I started actively participating in Wikimedia projects through the 1lib1ref campaigns organised by the African Libraries and Information Institutions Association (AfLIA).

I also participated in the library mapping exercise in which we created wikidata items for the libraries mapped and uploaded their photos on Wiki Commons. A Geo map was created using the open street map platform showing the exact locations of community and public libraries in Uganda.
This is one of the best deliverables achieved through a partnership between COLAU and WUGU.

In 2024, I participated in a GLAM mentorship program in a Wikisource training as a meentee. Later on in May 2025, I participated in the Women in Wikisource training as a mentor.

Earlier this year, the 'Newspaper project' was launched. In this, we are creating Wikipedia articles and wikidata items about newspapers in Uganda and uploading their photos on Wiki Commons. (This is still ongoing).
Furthermore, I have also participated in the WikiGap and Wiki Loves folklore, Wiki Loves Africa campaigns.

I have special interest in open knowledge and digital literacy; and in my current role as the Coordinator, I hope to liase more partnerships to support libraries in Uganda to close the digital divide so that we remain relevant in this paradigm shift.
I hope to expand knowledge about Wikimedia projects to librarians in Uganda, across Africa and in the global village.

I started editing Wikipedia in 2006. My experience has been mostly en.wikipedia (100K edits, 2K new en.wp pages) and wikidata (425K edits, 17K new items). On en.wikipedia I've particularly benefitted from support from participants in the fantastic Women In Red wikiproject. Though I’ve helped organize local meetups in Cambridge UK, but never before been to Wikimania!

A former history lecturer, I'm currently working as Chief Scientist for mindmage.ai, an online RPG technology platform. I've been involved in some research into Wikipedia in the past - I was research assistant on a project at the Oxford Internet Institute which examined wikipedia representation of MENA countries, and have coauthored on knowledge graph bias. I regard global inequality, and its relation with technology, as a crucial matter of human and environmental concern.

I graduated in physics with focus on astronomy. I worked on the German translation of the Wikibook on Basic Physics of Nuclear Medicine. During this project the need for a high quality PDF version of the this Wikibook became obvious. So I stated to work on mediawiki2latex a converter from MediaWiki to the professional LaTeX typesetting system. I used the converter to create many PDFs on the German an English Wikibooks projects. I’m a graduate in Art Studies and Cultural Management, and I started my Wikimedia journey at 18 in 2021 through the Wiki Education programme by Wikimedia México. I was the first at my university to complete a social service project with Wikimedia, which greatly shaped my relationship with the movement. As a member of Wikimedia México, I’ve contributed to projects like Memories on Wheels: The Evolution of Ancient and Classic Automobiles in Aguascalientes, combining my academic background with my passion for history and digital archiving. I edit in Spanish, English, and French, focusing on art, culture, anime, comics, antique cars, and my home state, Aguascalientes, and enjoy uploading photos to Wikimedia Commons.

I’ve contributed to events such as Wiki Loves México 2021, EAyGC Patrimonio Cultural and EAyGC Arte Mexicano in 2022, Editatón Filósofas, Artistas y Pensadoras 2024, and Juntas en Internet 2024, promoting women’s visibility.

Hello! We are the Let’s Connect program, a collaborative effort led by eight members from the Let’s Connect working group, each representing one of the eight regions. Our initiative was founded by Jessica Stephenson, who believed that peer-to-peer learning is essential for the sustainability of the Wikimedia movement.
Each month, we host learning clinics where we work together with a diverse range of Wikimedians, including affiliates, new and experienced organizers, and recently, newcomers. Our primary aim is to create safe, relaxed learning environments that showcase what interactive, peer-to-peer learning can look like both online and in person.
We invite individuals from various communities to share their expertise on a wide variety of topics, enabling us to learn from their experiences and challenges. With speakers from within the community, Let’s Connect participants gain valuable insights from real-Wiki experiences and highlights of current projects, programs, and tools in action.

olaniyanshola

Profile:
Olaniyan Olushola, a Nigerian Media strategist, language archivist, entrepreneur, public speaker, and open knowledge advocate, has left an indelible mark on the Wikimedia community. His journey began in 2015 when he founded the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria, a testament to his long-term commitment as a Wikimedia editor. His support has been instrumental in establishing numerous Wikimedia Affiliates in Nigeria, and he currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation.
His work encompassed open knowledge advocacy, capacity building, education, event organisation, the Gallery, Library, Archive, and Museum (GLAM) sector, and editing Wikipedia.
In 2017, he co-produced a Wikipedia Campaign in Nigeria to produce a video featuring prominent Nigerian artists as promotional material for Wikipedia. In under three weeks, the content had garnered over 17 million viewers worldwide. In 2018, it was nominated for the Best Video award at the African Excellence Awards, organised in Dublin.
In 2018, he initiated the WikiFanClub initiative at the University of Ibadan, in Southwestern Nigeria. The project focuses on recruiting Nigerian undergraduate students to the Wikimedia Movement by partnering with Nigerian tertiary institutions. As of 2024, the project is running in more than ten Nigerian tertiary institutions, with many more in the pipeline. Over 1000 undergraduates have benefited from the project.
In 2022, he began documenting the indigenous languages in Nigeria. By 2023, the project will have produced over 150 freely licensed audiovisual resources to enhance Wikipedia and its sister projects.
In 2023, I worked as a working group member who introduced the inaugural edition of the African Journalism Award. The project contributed over 2,000 secondary and reliable sources of African content to enhance African-related content on Wikipedia. I was featured as a panellist at the 2023 Wikiindaba in Agadir, Morocco, to discuss the project's impact in promoting Wikipedia and its sister African projects through engaging and recruiting professionals to the movement.
As a women's advocate, he worked with key partners to train and improve women's online visibility. In 2018, Olushola collaborated with Wiki-in Africa on Wiki Loves Women, a project supported by the Goethe Institute in Johannesburg, South Africa. The project engaged more than twenty women-led initiatives and organisations in Nigeria to identify and train women professionals to contribute to Wikipedia. The project helped improve over 2,000 profiles of notable Nigerian women on the English Wikipedia. In 2022, he led the Decolonisation project, supported by the Goethe Institut, Lagos—a gender-focused and multilingual initiative aimed at decolonizing the Internet, which eurocentric biases and narratives had dominated, and producing quality content in local languages about Nigerian women. Over 3000 profiles about Nigerian women were created and improved in Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba.
Since 2014, in Johannesburg, he has participated in all the Wikiindaba conferences, an annual regional gathering of all Wikimedians and Open Knowledge advocates in Africa and the Diaspora, to discuss and promote the importance of open knowledge in Africa.
In 2021, he served as a member of the Partnership Working Group for the Movement Strategy 2030. By 2023, he led the ongoing discussion to establish the "Planning West African Wikimedia Committee," which includes over 15 Wikimedian affiliates from Anglophone and Francophone countries. In 2024, he led the signing of a one-year contract to deploy the first-ever Wikipedia In Residence Program with Lagos State, aiming to document the state's heritage and people, and increase its visibility on the Internet. Still, in 2024, I started the Public Advocacy Team in Nigeria to create a team of Wikimedians who can access, review, and engage with the government and the public about the impact of public policies on Open Knowledge. It comprises leaders from each of the Wikimedia affiliates in Nigeria.
