Africa’s cultural heritage faces barriers from copyright laws, institutional restrictions, and digital exclusion. This session explores how Wikimedia initiatives like Wiki Loves Folklore and Wiki Loves Africa document and protect cultural assets while promoting inclusivity. It also highlights TAROCH (Towards a Recommendation on Open Cultural Heritage), a global effort advocating for UNESCO to endorse open access policies. Participants will gain insights into cultural preservation, digital inclusion, and how to support TAROCH’s advocacy for copyright reform and policy change.

Echoes of Hegemony: Media Dominance in Chilean Political Content on Wikipedia
Soylacarli, Patricia Diaz Rubio (WMCL)

🎥 Session recording: https://www.youtube.com/live/3UcJ5Tgcthc?feature=shared&t=7056 🎥

This session will present the results from a research where we analyze the concentration of media references in Chilean political articles on Wikipedia between 2020 and 2025. Using a quantitative methodology, we examined the five most cited media sources across 100 selected articles to identify patterns of media hegemony versus alternative or independent sources. This pattern reflects the structural context of Chile’s media ecosystem, marked by the hegemony of a few conglomerates. Although Wikipedia follows strict verifiability standards, diversifying hegemonic sources is essential to foster a more plural and democratic collaborative knowledge. The session will discuss the implications of media concentration and propose strategies to enhance source diversity on Wikipedia.
