This session aims to raise awareness of the human rights risks associated with volunteer contributions to Wikimedia projects and to offer practical strategies for ensuring safety and security. It will begin with a brief overview of core human rights, focusing on freedom of expression, privacy, and access to information. The session will then explore specific risks faced by Wikimedia volunteers, including cyberbullying, doxxing, harassment, and detention or arrest. Drawing from real-world examples and field experience, the team will present comprehensive recommendations and resources designed to help volunteers navigate these challenges while continuing to contribute safely and confidently. The session will also highlight the Foundation’s Human Rights Policy and how it guides efforts to support and protect at-risk communities.
