This session aims to raise awareness of the human rights risks associated with volunteer contributions to Wikimedia projects and to offer practical strategies for ensuring safety and security. It will begin with a brief overview of core human rights, focusing on freedom of expression, privacy, and access to information. The session will then explore specific risks faced by Wikimedia volunteers, including cyberbullying, doxxing, harassment, and detention or arrest. Drawing from real-world examples and field experience, the team will present comprehensive recommendations and resources designed to help volunteers navigate these challenges while continuing to contribute safely and confidently. The session will also highlight the Foundation’s Human Rights Policy and how it guides efforts to support and protect at-risk communities.

In the ever-evolving digital age, the protection and promotion of human rights within online communities, especially those centered around volunteer contributions like Wikimedia projects, are of paramount importance. This session aims to shine a light on the specific human rights risks faced by volunteers engaging in these platforms. By focusing on key areas such as freedom of expression, privacy, and the right to access information, we aim to foster a deeper understanding of the intrinsic human rights involved and the threats that volunteers may encounter, including cyberbullying, doxxing, harassment, and even the risk of arrest. The session will also highlight the Foundation’s commitments towards Human Rights, the due diligence processes and how it guides efforts to support and protect at-risk communities.

Our objectives are twofold: firstly, to raise awareness among Wikimedia volunteers and the broader community about the potential human rights challenges that can arise from their invaluable work. Secondly, to arm these individuals with effective strategies and tools to safeguard themselves against these risks, ensuring a safe and secure environment for all contributors.

The session will begin with an in-depth overview of human rights, specifically highlighting the relevance of freedom of expression, privacy, and the right to access information within the context of volunteer work on Wiki projects. We believe that an informed volunteer is an empowered volunteer, thus understanding these foundational principles is critical.

We will delve into the unique set of risks that volunteers might face. Through the presentation of real-world examples and case studies, we aim to illustrate the various forms of risks and threats, thereby bringing theoretical risks into a more tangible realm. This segment intends to not only educate but also to foster empathy and solidarity among the community members. Moreover, during the session we will present the work and contributions around due diligence, risk assessments, and related efforts.

In the final part of our session, the focus will shift to actionable recommendations and resources. Drawing from best practices and expert advice, we will outline a comprehensive set of strategies designed to enhance personal security, protect privacy, and promote a culture of respect and safety online. This will include practical tips on digital security, guidelines for engaging in potentially sensitive topics, and resources for those seeking support or advice in the face of threats.
