According to the “Rainbow Map” ranking proposed by ILGA Europe, Poland ranks near the bottom of the list of LGBTQ+-friendly European countries (especially if one takes the European Union countries under consideration). In my presentation, I will briefly discuss the situation of members of the Polish queer community over the years, highlighting the historical and social context of the current state of affairs. In the second part of my talk, I will explain how non-heteronormative people and allies are currently organizing themselves on the Polish-language Wikipedia, the current state of the articles on this topic, and the steps taken by the Wikimedia Polska Association to ensure that queer people feel comfortable and welcome at the events we organize. In the end, I will explore whether the Polish-language Wikipedia is, or could become, a space where the LGBTQ+ community is actively engaged, and whether the articles developed as part of the LGBT WikiProject serve as, or may become, an educational tool for both educators and individuals seeking to expand their knowledge. I will consider what needs to happen to support and accelerate such efforts, outline the opportunities and challenges, and discuss the Polish affiliate’s planned activities for the near future.
