Wikipedia and Wikidata are the beating heart of data online, not only for large commercial projects, but also for small community knowledge projects. This talk introduces the Lesbian and Gay Liberation in Canada (LGLC) project, and our intersection with Wikipedia and Wikidata in our work to make archival information broadly available online (lglc.ca). The project features 34,000 records about gay liberation organizing in Canada, starting with the 1964 launch of the first liberationist homophile group in Canada through to the 1985 expansion of custody rights to include non-birth mothers, a key moment in lesbian organizing.

The talk will touch briefly on the Wikipedia Editathons we have held in the last decade to help share reliable information about queer history in Canada and the challenges we have faced adding information about Francophone and women’s activism to French and English Wikipedia.

It will then turn to the broader stakes of these additions, not just to Wikipedia but also to Wikidata, with an outline of the centrality of Wikidata URIs in the linked data efforts of queer and cultural history projects like the LGLC, The Transgender Media Portal, and Linked Infrastructure for Networked Cultural (LINCS).
