Over the years, LGBTQ content on the Spanish Wikipedia has rapidly increased and its community of queer editors has become one of the biggest and most active groups focused on these topics across Wikimedia projects. Most of this work has been driven by the Spanish LGBT WikiProject, whose members went from creating 7 new LGBT-related articles in 2017 to more than 1,000 new articles per year today. This talk presents the history of the Spanish LGBT WikiProject and explores how its members transformed it into the most successful Wikiproject on the Spanish Wikipedia. It explains the strategies applied to grow and sustain its community of editors, and, more crucially, it focuses on why they believe that queer content from the Global South belongs on Wikimedia projects, the importance of preserving queer collective memory, and how this vision continues to motivate the group's work.
