Is generative AI a powerful ally or dangerous adversary to open knowledge creation on Wikipedia? Or somewhere in between? This panel examines the complex relationship between AI tools and Wikipedia's mission to build reliable, verifiable content. Wiki Education's LiAnna Davis will explain the work the organization undertook to understand the implications of students using generative AI to craft content in 2025. She will walk through what the organization learned, and how Wiki Education's interventions are helping stem the tide of gen AI content while also offering ways AI-powered tools can help in the editing process. Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight, Wikipedia Visiting Scholar at Northeastern University, a Wiki Education-facilitated position, will describe her academic research project, “Experimenting and evaluating the use of generative AI for enhancing Wikipedia biographies: A case study of improving historical women writers' articles with short leads,” and provide a brief analysis of the findings. Our discussion explores emerging AI detection strategies, opportunities for AI to help address Wikipedia's challenges, and the broader implications for our collaborative project, 25 years in and beyond. <br>
