UI language
Language plays a critical role in shaping who participates in Wikimedia and how knowledge is created within educational contexts. While Wikimedia in education initiatives continue to grow globally, language remains a key factor influencing access, contribution, and sustainability. This interactive workshop explores how language affects participation in Wikimedia-based education programs and how structured support systems can help address these challenges. Drawing on the work of the EduWiki Hub, participants will examine how services such as peer learning spaces, knowledge showcases, and shared resources can support educators and communities working across different linguistic contexts. Through guided activities, participants will reflect on their own experiences with language in education programs, identify specific barriers, and connect these to real Wikimedia use cases. They will also explore how existing support structures can be adapted or strengthened to better serve multilingual and underrepresented language communities. The session is designed as a participatory space for exchange, where attendees learn from one another’s contexts rather than from a fixed model. By the end of the workshop, participants will have a clearer understanding of how language shapes participation in Wikimedia education and how collaborative support systems can strengthen inclusion and long-term engagement.
