<p>Most of the world's knowledge is oral, since most languages are spoken rather than written, yet publications rarely include it as a source. We have lost over 500 languages, and, per Ethnologue, over 3,226 languages are endangered. Losing these languages would mean losing the knowledge of a few hundred million people. This is because we are stuck with colonial era infrastructure which treats written records as scientific and factual but spoken recordings as opinions, narratives, stories and memories. A growing network of language documenters and archivists is testing a shared practical workflow that reimagines how Wikimedia projects can benefit from the vast knowledge of humankind.</p>
