Many underrepresented language communities are digitally present but not digitally sovereign. Contributors are encouraged to preserve and grow their languages online, yet most technical systems, governance discussions, documentation, and recognition structures still operate primarily through English. Using experiences from Indic Wikimedia communities, this talk reflects on the contradiction between language inclusion and language dependency. It asks a difficult but necessary question: if communities must continuously rely on dominant languages to validate and sustain their own presence online, what exactly are we preserving?
