Despite Hausa being one of the most widely spoken languages in Africa, **Hausa Sign Language (HSL)** remains largely invisible in the digital world. While technologies exist for sign languages like ASL and BSL, Deaf communities across Northern Nigeria and the Sahel are often left without tools that reflect how they truly communicate. This project is about changing that—by building the first comprehensive digital corpus for HSL. **Key Objectives:** * **Documentation:** Capture the richness and everyday realities of HSL as it is naturally used in communities. * **Technological Integration:** Develop a dataset that can power HSL-to-Hausa translation using computer vision. * **Empowerment:** Open doors to better access in healthcare, education, and legal services. **Lightning Talk (10 Minutes):** 1. **The Gap (2m):** How a widely spoken language lacks an accessible visual system for its Deaf users. 2. **The Process (3m):** Working hand-in-hand with communities while navigating regional differences like Kano and Zaria. 3. **The Impact (3m):** A simple prototype “dictionary” app helping Deaf students feel included in classrooms. 4. **The Future (2m):** A step toward real-time AI interpretation—and a call for collaboration. **Conclusion:** This is not just about recording signs; it is about recognizing people, preserving identity, and making sure no one is left out of the digital future. **Goal:** To bring HSL from the margins into the heart of inclusive technology.
