Russian Language Speakers Meetup
The Russian Language Speakers Meetup at Wikimania Paris is an open, informal gathering for contributors who work in Russian or come from Russian-speaking communities across Wikimedia projects. The meetup aims to create a shared space for connection, mutual support, and honest conversation about the current realities of contributing in Russian in a rapidly changing social, political, and technological environment.
Russian-language Wikimedia projects face a unique mix of challenges: editor retention and burnout, governance tensions, language and terminology debates, cross-wiki fragmentation, and increasing pressure on volunteers operating in different legal and cultural contexts. At the same time, these communities demonstrate remarkable resilience, creativity, and adaptability — from content diversification and outreach to cross-country collaboration.
This meetup is not a formal presentation but a facilitated conversation. Participants will be invited to briefly introduce themselves, share the projects they are involved in, and discuss key questions, such as what is currently the hardest part of contributing in Russian. What support structures work — and which ones fail? How can Russian-language contributors collaborate more effectively across projects, regions, and roles? What do we want Russian-language Wikimedia communities to look like in five years?
The session is intended for editors, functionaries, researchers, organisers, and allies — including non-Russian speakers who want to better understand these communities. No prior preparation is required. The goal is to listen, exchange experiences, surface shared concerns, and leave with a clearer sense of collective priorities and possible next steps.
