Wiki for Minorities: From Representation to Empowerment

Across Africa, many minority communities remain underrepresented within the global knowledge ecosystem. Their languages, cultures, and histories are often missing or marginally documented on Wikimedia platforms. While increasing visibility is an important first step, meaningful inclusion requires more than representation, it demands empowerment, ownership, and sustainable participation. This session examines how minority communities can transition from being subjects of documentation to becoming active contributors, organizers, and decision-makers within the Wikimedia Movement. Drawing from practical experience in supporting minority language initiatives and community-led organizing, the presentation will highlight strategies for building inclusive editing communities, strengthening local leadership, improving access to funding, and fostering long-term capacity development. It will also address structural challenges such as digital access barriers, language marginalization, and limited institutional support, while proposing scalable and community-centered solutions. By sharing lessons learned and practical approaches, this session aims to contribute to the broader Movement Strategy goals of knowledge equity and decentralized decision-making. Ultimately, the session calls for a shift from symbolic inclusion to transformative participation where minority communities are not only visible on Wikimedia platforms, but empowered to shape narratives, influence policies, and sustain their own knowledge ecosystems.
