Let's get tangible: Promoting knowledge equity and allyship in communities
Striving for knowledge equity within the movement doesn’t just mean to close knowledge gaps and make marginalised knowledge (more) visible, but to make the community feel more responsible for and able to support a more diverse community as a whole. In the last four years a team at Wikimedia Germany worked on promoting marginalised knowledge and knowledge equity and our team has learned a lot through different approaches in raising awareness for equity and promoting allyship within the community as well as reaching out to newcomers from marginalised communities.
In this session we don’t just want to tell you about what we have learned but rather make this a tangible experience with a train-the-trainer approach as we will work through different exercises and try out methods and concepts that can help individuals and groups to become more aware of structures of power and inequity in knowledge (re)production and develop and strengthen their positioning and allyship for knowledge equity. All methods and materials used in this workshop session will be available on Wikimedia Commons, so participants will leave the session with the ability, understanding, and materials to facilitate all exercises and methods themselves as well as adapting them to their own needs and contexts.
