Climate Conversations: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Knowledge Sharing

This panel will share the insights of Wikimedians from diverse regions and professional backgrounds who are working to strengthen Wikipedia’s climate change content and support informed decisions-making in the face of one of the defining crises of our time. At a time when climate science is increasingly politicised and AI-generated misinformation is proliferating, sharing high-quality, well-sourced, and globally and locally relevant climate information is more urgent than ever.
With experience spanning academic research, science communication and community organising, the panelists share a common goal: improving the quality, accessibility, and equity of climate information on Wikipedia. They each approach that goal from varied regional, linguistic, and institutional contexts.
The session will situate the climate information crisis within today’s broader digital information landscape, including the challenges posed by AI-generated content and coordinated misinformation. Panelists will reflect on lessons learned from their work share how we to improve climate coverage in practice.
Together the panel will explore how Wikimedians can respond effectively to the climate information crisis together while advancing equity, representation, and trust across the movement.

* Dr Femke Nijsse (Netherlands/UK), senior lecturer at the University of Exeter and long-time climate contributor to Wikipedia.
* Evelin Heidel (Uruguay), Program Director at Wikimedistas de Uruguay and open knowledge strategist.
* Mohammed Amine Ben Loulou (Algeria), community organizer and Regional Coordinator for Wiki for Climate Change (Maghreb region) campaign in 2023
