CultureStrong: Respecting Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property and Indigenous Data Sovereignty on Wikimedia Platforms
**In room A+B (Capacity 50 people)**
In this session, Dr Terri Janke, Solicitor Director, and Shevaun Wright, Senior Associate, of Terri Janke & Company (TJC) will share their work developing the CultureStrong Guide for Wikimedia Australia (WMAU). Created in collaboration between WMAU, TJC and an Indigenous Expert Working Group, the Guide provides practical guidance for Wikimedia contributors and users working with Indigenous content across Wikimedia platforms.
The CultureStrong Guide gives contributors and users practical ways to work with Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP) and Indigenous Data Sovereignty (IDSov) on Wikimedia platforms. It introduces a risk-based matrix and practical tools for identifying and working with Indigenous content, recognising Indigenous authority and attribution, and supporting culturally aware engagement on open knowledge platforms.
Through an overview of the Guide and an interactive discussion, attendees are invited to discuss, reflect on and explore how these approaches may be adapted and applied within their own cultural contexts.
