For over a decade, Deror Lin’s "Coolest Projects" session was a highlight of Wikimania. It was the stage where we celebrated the projects that made us say, "I wish I thought of that." From 2011 until his last conference, Deror championed innovation that was fun, visual, and inspiring.
In this special 25th-anniversary session, we honor his legacy by reviving the tradition. We are not just looking at history; we are celebrating the "hacks" that expanded what a wiki can do.
A committee of community volunteers will review past presentations and issue a public call for proposals to select the final 10 nominees. These projects represent the full spectrum of our movement's creativity: from the first offline Wikipedia DVD and massive monument photo contests to unique edit-a-thons focused on cooking and photographing local cheeses.
The session will be fast-paced and highly visual. After presenting the 10 finalists, we will hand the power back to you—the audience. Keeping with Deror’s tradition, the winners will be decided by the volume of your applause. Come ready to cheer for the projects that built the joy in our movement.
**PLEASE NOTE: WE ASK YOU TO PARTICIPATE IN THE SESSION BY CLAPPING. THIS MEANS THAT THIS SESSION MIGHT NOT BE SUITABLE FOR PEOPLE WHO DO NOT APPRECIATE LOUD APPLAUSE. WE CONSIDERED ALTERNATIVES BUT HAVE DECIDED TO KEEP THE FORMAT AS IT IS. THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT WE HAVE A LARGE ROOM, AND WE WILL ENCOURAGE THE "CLAPPING" PART OF THE AUDIENCE TO SIT TOWARDS THE FRONT AND OTHERS TO SIT MORE TOWARDS THE BACK.**
