The Open Knowledge Foundation, its global network, and the Digital Public Good CKAN have enabled, for over two decades, the access, sharing, and reuse of public information and scientific research all over the World. Our skills, technical architecture and community effort have placed many institutions and efforts around open science and open data in a solid place to experiment with AI. But the last three years of innovation have been fast, somehow overwhelming for the communities we work with, with a lot of technical experimentation that is not necessary democratic and accessible for the low tech and low resources communities we initially served and want to empower. That is why the Open Knowledge technical team has embarked in an effort to create an MCP that will work on CKAN that is easily deployable and reproducible to enable data to be accessed and shared easily, by anyone and to power other knowledge ecosystems. We have identified similar efforts across the Wikimedia ecosystem, so this workshop hopes to go beyond sharing our prototype, to explore similar efforts and understand the decisions behind it to guide our next steps.
