🥗 Lunch meetup: 3D in Wikimedia meetup: getting 3D object support working
There is a strong and growing need to host 3D rendered objects on Wikimedia platforms (especially on Commons and Wikipedia). Many objects and locations in the world can best be understood and viewed using 3D rendered displays of them. Hosting 3D objects on Wiki articles also makes those article subjects more engaging for the reader whilst also updating Wikipedia and Commons. A valuable modernization of our platform. In theory there is limited support for hosting 3D however it is very limited and severely lacking. Additionally we have a number of partner organisations, especially amoungst GLAM institutions, who are interested in donating content to Commons. Locations that host 3D renderings are becoming increasingly commercialized creating an ever stronger use case for 3D support on Wiki.
Currently there is a community of Wiki editors, activists, and developers who are working on this problem. However this community needs greater coordination and a platform for communication on a number of issues ranging from streamlining Wiki hosting with the WMF to selecting the most appropriate 3D object formats to use. This event will provide that platform to discuss these issues and coordinate action to deliver 3D support for Wikipedia and the other Wikis!
