🥗 Lunch meetup: Community readers highlights
This moderated panel will bring together Wikimedia Foundation Product & Technology staff and volunteer editors from different regions and language communities to explore how readership and editing intersect, and how we can thoughtfully deepen those connections with an eye to equity.
Panelists will discuss equitable reader access to knowledge across contexts, including language disparities, machine-translated content, low-bandwidth experiences, regional usage patterns, and accessibility beyond text (such as screen readers and reduced-motion design). From a technology perspective, we will examine how reader-facing features like reading lists, watchlists, and discovery tools can support engagement without overwhelming contributors or compromising core principles.
For more established wikis, the conversation will also explore how to thoughtfully convert passive readers into active and participating readers, who might one day become first-time editors. What encourages participation? What barriers remain? How do we design experiences that invite contribution while respecting different levels of readiness and digital literacy? Volunteer panelists will share local initiatives aimed at strengthening reader engagement and participation, while staff will provide insight into how product decisions balance the needs of readers and editors. Together, we will reflect on how equitable reader experiences can support active participation and long-term movement sustainability.
