Many contributors have heard of the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC), but far fewer understand what it actually means in practice for their communities. How does it affect everyday editing? What should you do if you believe a rule has been broken? Where can you seek support, and how do enforcement pathways really work? This session is a practical “UCoC 101” — a hitchhiker’s guide to understanding the system from reporting to resolution. We will walk through what the UCoC is, how it applies across Wikimedia projects, and the different levels of response available within the movement. Participants will gain a general idea of what issues are basic and can be resolved locally, and where you might have to take it to a different support structure. For newer contributors, this workshop offers a clear and accessible introduction to rights, responsibilities, and reporting options. For experienced editors, administrators, and community organizers, it provides an opportunity to examine how the an easier guidelines and navigation through the process can be used to manage violations more consistently and sustainably. The goal is not only awareness, but confidence: helping participants navigate UCoC processes thoughtfully, reduce uncertainty, and strengthen community trust.
