Keynote: Respecting Indigenous Knowledge in Open Spaces - Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP) & Indigenous Data Sovereignty (IDSov) across Wikimedia Projects
Wikimania offers an opportunity to consider how the Wikimedia movement can build inclusive digital knowledge spaces while respecting Indigenous rights. This First Nations panel focuses on an Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP) and Indigenous Data Sovereignty (IDSov) Guide to cultural protocol, developed for Wikimedia Australia and shared as best practice for contributors globally.
Indigenous leaders and Wikimedians from Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand, Canada and Chile will examine how ICIP and IDSov intersect with open knowledge platforms, including Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. Drawing on the ICIP & IDSov project led by Dr Terri Janke, panelists will explore:
* How an Indigenous-led ICIP & IDSov Guide can inform respectful contributor practice across the movement
* Tensions and alignments between open access and Indigenous cultural authority
* Practical steps to embed Indigenous rights and responsibilities across Wikimedia projects
Through short reflections and moderated discussion, the session will offer concrete pathways for contributors, affiliates and partners seeking to work responsibly with Indigenous knowledge. Grounded in lived experience and community leadership, it centres self-determined approaches to collaboration.
