Cultural heritage institutions and their collections are fundamental to Wikimedia's mission, providing access to primary sources of history and culture that millions engage with daily. While many memory organizations share the open movement's values, the majority of the world's cultural heritage remains inaccessible online—whether locally or internationally. The Wikimedia movement serves as a crucial stakeholder and ally in supporting institutions seeking to make their collections available, with its global network of volunteers and experts proving essential to this endeavor.
This workshop demonstrates accessible digitization processes and streamlined workflows for Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata, specifically designed for resource-constrained institutions. In 2022, the Goethe-Institut in São Paulo, Brazil, collaborating with Wikimedia Brasil and the Moreira Salles Institute, developed a comprehensive practical guide for digitizing and disseminating archival materials at scale within limited-resource environments. The workshop presents this newly translated guide with detailed demonstrations of each implementation stage, equipping participants with the knowledge and tools to undertake similar initiatives within their own institutional contexts. These resources are already being replicated across Latin American institutions through the Goethe-Institut's global network, and this workshop extends these proven methodologies to the broader Wikimedia movement through capacity building and knowledge exchange.
