Making indigenous languages ready for Wikifunctions
Indigenous and minority languages often lack the structured linguistic resources needed to participate fully in emerging multilingual knowledge systems. WikiFunctions, the platform designed to support Abstract Wikipedia, has pioneered fragment experiments that demonstrate how short, context-rich sentences can seed the generation of functions across Wikimedia projects. However, many communities remain unsure how to begin collecting and organizing these fragments or how to translate them into reusable functions that integrate with Wikidata Lexemes and broader knowledge graphs.
This workshop will introduce participants to practical methods for collecting language fragments, illustrate how to create functions from those fragments within Wikifunctions, and demonstrate best practices on balancing lexical data from Wikidata with function-generated content. We will showcase real examples from ongoing experiments and provide guided, hands-on activities that empower contributors to prepare language material ready for Wikifunctions workflows. Attendees will learn how to define lexical items, structure fragments to maximize reusability, and navigate decisions about when to reference external lexemes versus generating content dynamically.
This session improves technical skills and equal participation among Wikimedia contributors, leading to better, more inclusive language representation in future knowledge systems.
