How to Use Wikipedia Offline: Offline Access Tools and Use Cases
This session will show you how to get to and use Wikipedia and other Wikimedia resources without an internet connection. When the internet goes down, learning shouldn't stop. It is especially important in places where electricity isn't always reliable, internet access is limited, mobile data is expensive, learning is done remotely, or there is censorship.
You'll learn how to use offline tools like Kiwix to download and access all or part of Wikimedia content. No signal? No problem. We'll walk through how to install and use these tools on Windows, Android, Mac, and iOS devices. You'll also learn how to work with ZIM files, including how to download, store, and share them easily. Additionally, we'll explore other offline resources and simple methods for saving and reading individual articles offline, giving you a complete toolkit for offline access.
Knowledge should be available even when the internet is not. We'll explore real-world examples from Africa and other parts of the world that show how offline Wikipedia has made a difference in schools, during disasters, in prisons, and in remote communities. These stories demonstrate that access to knowledge can truly change lives.
This session is for Wikimedians, educators, and anyone who supports free knowledge, especially those living in areas with limited or no internet access.
