A panel of contributors from different offline projects will lead a brainstorming session on how to make free and open knowledge accessible in remote areas. Speakers will share practical experiences while participants can connect to several offline systems available in the room and explore them directly on their own devices. The session will address key challenges: sourcing equipment (from purpose-built devices and refurbished computers to low-cost solutions such as Raspberry Pi, including DIY approaches like 3D-printed cases and storage choices); working in difficult environments, where reliable power and connectivity cannot be assumed; apps and content, including how to deploy and customize platforms and integrate both global and locally developed materials; and collaborative knowledge sharing, enabling communities not only to access knowledge but also to record and share their own stories through text, audio, and video. A central goal of the workshop is to give participants a clear overview of the many offline solutions that exist today. Through hands-on demonstrations, speakers will present different hardware setups, power solutions, and software platforms such as IIAB and Kiwix, with examples of customization and content deployment. Participants will learn how to navigate what prospective users at times find to be a confusing landscape of technical choices and gain a practical understanding of how to design an offline knowledge system that fits their context.
